Dr Paul Funston
Dr Paul Funston is a globally respected lion ecologist and conservation practitioner with over 30 years of field experience across Africa. A former Senior Director of Panthera's Lion Program and Associate Professor, he has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers, books and technical reports that have shaped modern understanding of lion sociality, territoriality and hunting behaviour.
Through African Lion Conservation (Pty) Ltd, he now works across the continent advising on lion recovery, reintroductions, protected-area management and human–lion coexistence — and has trained more guides, students and conservation professionals in more African countries than any other lion specialist.
