Season Matcher — EcoTraining Junior Rangers
Conservation ChallengeEarth is tilted at 23.5 degrees — and it ALWAYS tilts the same way as it orbits the Sun! That tilt is what gives us seasons. When the Southern Hemisphere (where South Africa is!) leans TOWARD the Sun, we get summer. When it leans AWAY, we get winter.
Earth's axis always points the same direction in space. As Earth orbits the Sun, different hemispheres get more direct sunlight. Southern Hemisphere tilting TOWARD the Sun = Summer in South Africa. Tilting AWAY = Winter. The in-between positions are Autumn and Spring.
In some places near the equator, there are only two seasons — wet and dry! The tilt of Earth's axis has less effect near the equator, so the amount of sunlight stays pretty much the same all year. But in South Africa, we feel all four seasons because we're further from the equator.
If it's SUMMER in South Africa (Southern Hemisphere), what season is it in England (Northern Hemisphere)?
You understand how Earth's tilt creates the seasons!
