Lesson 9.1 — What is a Reptile?
🦁

Kitimu says: "Reptiles are masters at finding the perfect spot to warm up! Your mission is to think like a reptile and find the best basking spots around you. Use your reptile checklist and see if you can work out why they love these places. Let's go, Cub!"

🎒 What You Need
Garden or outdoor area
Notebook and pencil
Thermometer (optional)
Your reptile checklist
📋 How To Do It
  1. Learn the reptile checklist: Before you head out, remember the four things that make a reptile: they have scales, they are cold-blooded (ectothermic), they breathe with lungs, and most lay eggs. Keep this checklist in your mind!
  2. Scout for sunny rocks: Walk around your garden or outdoor area and find flat rocks that get direct sunlight. Touch them — are they warm? This is exactly what a lizard or snake would look for to heat up its body.
  3. Check warm walls: Find walls that face the sun (usually north-facing in the Southern Hemisphere). Feel the surface. Geckos and agamas love these warm vertical surfaces — it's like a reptile heater!
  4. Investigate hiding spots: Look for log piles, leaf litter, sandy patches, and gaps under rocks. These are where reptiles shelter when it's too hot or too cold. They move between sun and shade to regulate their temperature.
  5. Map your findings: Draw a simple map of your area. Mark every reptile habitat you found with a sun symbol (basking spot) or a moon symbol (hiding spot). Label each one and note why a reptile would choose it.
Ranger Tip: Because reptiles are cold-blooded, they can't make their own body heat like you can. That's why they bask in the sun — it's their way of "charging up" like a solar-powered robot! The best time to spot them is mid-morning when they're warming up.
Safety note: Never put your hands into holes, under rocks, or into log piles without looking first. Some reptiles hide in these spots and may bite if surprised. Look with your eyes, not your fingers!
