OUTDOOR MISSION β€” FINAL

My First Garden Bird Count

Lesson 6.7 β€” My First Life List
🦁

Kitimu says: "This is it, Cub β€” your FINAL mission for the Feathered Friends module! Every great birder started with their first count. Sit quietly, watch carefully, and record every bird you see. This is the beginning of YOUR life list. Let's go!"

πŸŽ’ What You Need
30 minutes of quiet time
A seat with a view
Pencil + worksheet
Binoculars (optional)
πŸ“‹ How To Do It
  1. Pick your spot: Find somewhere with a good view of trees, bushes, ground, and sky β€” a garden chair, a balcony, a bench in a park. Sit down and get comfortable. You're staying for 30 minutes!
  2. Wait 5 minutes: Sit completely still and quiet. The birds need to forget you're there. After 5 minutes, they'll start acting normally again.
  3. Count and tally: Every time you see a bird, make a tally mark next to its name on your worksheet. If you see the same species again, add another mark. If you see a NEW species, start a new row.
  4. Use your skills: For each bird, use the 5-Step ID Method from Lesson 6.5 β€” size, shape, colour, beak, behaviour. Write a short description next to any bird you can't name.
  5. Start your Life List: Transfer your final count to the Life List page in your worksheet. This is YOUR personal list β€” every new bird you ever see from now on gets added. Real birders keep their life list FOREVER!

Congratulations, Sky Watcher!

You've completed ALL 7 outdoor missions in the Feathered Friends module. You've hunted feathers, tested beaks, watched behaviours, built nests, identified birds, mastered camouflage, and started your very own life list. You are now a certified SKY WATCHER!

Ranger Tip: Keep adding to your life list wherever you go β€” on holiday, at school, visiting family. The average keen birder in South Africa has 300-400 species on their life list. How many can YOU get?
Level up: Join a real citizen science project like SABAP2 (Southern African Bird Atlas Project) or BirdLasser β€” your bird counts help real scientists track bird populations across Africa!
πŸ“ΈπŸŽ‰ Share your final bird count AND a photo of your Life List in the WhatsApp group! Let's celebrate your Sky Watcher Badge!
