OUTDOOR MISSION

Feather Hunt

Lesson 6.1 — What Makes a Bird?
🦁

Kitimu says: "Now you know what makes a bird special — feathers! No other animal on Earth has them. Your mission: head outside and find as many different feathers as you can. Each one tells a story. Let's go, Cub!"

🎒 What You Need
Garden or park
A small bag or box
Magnifying glass (optional)
Your worksheet
📋 How To Do It
  1. Choose your zone: Pick a garden, park, or outdoor area. Look under trees, near bushes, beside water, and on open ground — different birds hang out in different spots!
  2. Hunt for feathers: Walk slowly and scan the ground. Collect every feather you find — big ones, tiny ones, fluffy ones, stiff ones. Try to find at least 3 different types.
  3. Sort your feathers: Lay them out and sort them. Which ones are flight feathers (long and stiff)? Which are down feathers (soft and fluffy)? Which are body/contour feathers (smooth and medium)?
  4. The bird body test: Find 5 things around you. For each one, ask: does it have feathers? A beak? Wings? Hollow bones? Lay eggs? If it has ALL of these — it's a bird! This is exactly what you learned in the lesson.
  5. Draw your best feather: Pick your favourite feather and draw it on your worksheet. Label the parts: shaft, barbs, and vane. Bonus points if you can guess which bird it came from!
Ranger Tip: Hold a feather up to the light — you can see the tiny hooks (barbules) that zip the barbs together like a zipper. That's what makes feathers waterproof and perfect for flying!
Safety note: Always wash your hands after handling feathers. If a feather looks dirty or is near a dead bird, leave it and find another one.
