Local Action

Lesson 13.6 — Think Global, Act Local
🦁

Kitimu says: "This is where it gets REAL! No more just learning about problems — today you're going to DO something about them. One small action in your own area can make a genuine difference for the wildlife and plants around you. Let's go, Cub!"

🎒 What You Need
Gloves & bin bag (for litter cleanup)
Seeds or a small plant (for planting)
Sticks, string, bottles (for building)
Camera or phone
An adult helper
📋 How To Do It
  1. Choose your action: Pick ONE real conservation action from this list: (A) Pick up litter in your street, park, or school grounds. (B) Plant a tree, flowers, or vegetable seeds. (C) Start a compost pile for food scraps. (D) Build a bird feeder from a recycled bottle or container. (E) Create a bug hotel from sticks, pine cones, bark, and leaves. Choose the one that excites you most!
  2. Take a BEFORE photo: Before you start, take a photo of the area or materials. This is your "before" evidence. Real conservationists always document their starting point so they can measure the difference they made.
  3. Do the work: Spend at least 20-30 minutes on your action. If you're picking up litter, fill an entire bag. If you're planting, dig a proper hole and water it well. If you're building a feeder or bug hotel, make it sturdy and put it in a good spot. Do it properly — this is REAL conservation!
  4. Take an AFTER photo: When you're done, take another photo from the same spot. Look at the difference! YOU did that. One person, one action, one real change in the world.
  5. Write your impact statement: In your notebook, answer: What did I do? How long did it take? What will the impact be? How many animals or plants might benefit? What would happen if 100 Junior Rangers all did this same action in THEIR neighbourhoods?
Ranger Tip: If every Junior Ranger picked up just 20 pieces of litter, planted one tree, or built one bird feeder — imagine the total impact across the country. Big change starts with small actions multiplied by many people. YOU are the starting point!
Safety note: Always work with an adult. Wear gloves when handling litter. Never pick up sharp objects, glass, or chemicals. If you find something dangerous, tell an adult and leave it alone.
