The Final Track Mission

Lesson 12.7 — The Final Track Mission
🦁

Kitimu says: "This is it — your ULTIMATE tracking challenge! Everything you've learned comes together now. You're going on a real tracking expedition to find and record every animal sign you can. Complete this mission and you earn the MASTER TRACKER BADGE. Let's go, Cub!"

🎒 What You Need
30 minutes of outdoor time
Pencil, crayons & notebook
A blank sheet for your map
Magnifying glass (optional)
Camera or phone (optional)
Your worksheet
📋 How To Do It
  1. Plan your route: Choose an outdoor area — your garden, a park, a nature trail, or any green space. Before you start, draw a rough map of the area on your blank sheet. Mark key landmarks: trees, paths, water, buildings, fences.
  2. Begin your expedition: Set a timer for 30 minutes. Walk slowly and quietly — real trackers move like shadows. Use ALL your senses: eyes scanning the ground, ears listening for calls, nose catching scents.
  3. Record EVERY animal sign: Find and note as many as you can — tracks in soil, droppings, feathers, nests, spider webs, scratch marks on bark, digging holes, chewed leaves, fur caught on fences, insect trails, burrow entrances, egg shells, snail trails, and animal sounds you hear.
  4. Map your discoveries: Each time you find a sign, mark its location on your map with a symbol or number. Write a description next to it: what you found, what animal you think left it, and how old you think the sign is.
  5. Write your tracker's report: When your 30 minutes are up, count your total discoveries. On your worksheet, write a short expedition report: How many signs did you find? Which animal was the most active in your area? What surprised you? What was the hardest sign to find?
Ranger Tip: Professional trackers in Africa can identify over 100 different animal species from their signs alone — no camera traps needed! Your tracking map today is exactly how real wildlife surveys begin. You're doing real science!
Master Tracker Challenge: Can you find at least 10 different animal signs in 30 minutes? If you can, you've truly earned your Master Tracker Badge! Remember: tracks, droppings, feathers, webs, nests, sounds, scratches, diggings, fur, and chewed plants all count.
Safety note: Never touch droppings, dead animals, or unknown substances with your bare hands. Stay on paths where possible, watch for snakes and thorns, and always go with an adult. Wash your hands thoroughly when you return home.
📸 Take a photo of your completed tracking map and share it in the Junior Rangers WhatsApp group! You are now a MASTER TRACKER!
