Kitimu says: "Humans have used plants for medicine, food, shelter, and tools for thousands of years! Today you're going to explore like an ancient herbalist and build your very own bush pharmacy collection. Let's go, Cub!"
🎒 What You Need
A garden, park, or nature area
An adult helper
A tray or flat surface
Small labels or sticky notes
Your worksheet
Pencil & crayons
📋 How To Do It
Go foraging with an adult: Walk through your area and look for plants with known uses. Ask your adult helper to confirm which plants are safe to pick. Remember the rule: only collect from plants that are plentiful — never strip a plant bare!
Find a medicine plant: Look for aloe vera (healing gel for burns), lavender (calming), or any plant your family uses for remedies. Collect a small piece and label it: "Medicine — used for..."
Find a food plant: Look for herbs (rosemary, mint, basil), fruit trees, or edible leaves. Collect a small sample and label it: "Food — eaten as..."
Find a building/tool plant: Look for bamboo, reeds, strong sticks, or fibrous plants used for weaving. These plants provide building materials and tools. Collect a sample and label it: "Building/Tools — used for..."
Find a shade or shelter plant: Identify a large tree that provides shade or a dense bush that could shelter animals. You don't need to collect this one — sketch it on your worksheet and label its use.
Build your bush pharmacy: Lay out all your collected samples on a tray. Label each one with its name and use. Take a photo of your complete bush pharmacy display. On your worksheet, draw and label all 5 plants and their uses.
Ranger Tip: Indigenous people across Africa have used plants as medicine for centuries. The African potato treats infections, the fever tree bark fights malaria, and devil's claw relieves pain. Traditional knowledge is real science!
Safety note: NEVER eat or taste any plant unless an adult has confirmed it is safe. Many plants look edible but are actually poisonous. Always forage with a knowledgeable adult.
