Lesson 10.5 — Spider Engineers
🦁

Kitimu says: "Spiders are nature's greatest engineers — every web is a masterpiece of design! Your mission is to find as many different types of spider webs as you can and figure out which spider architect built each one. Let's go, Cub!"

🎒 What You Need
Garden or outdoor area
Camera or phone
Spray bottle with water
Pencil and paper
📋 How To Do It
  1. Learn the web types: Before you start, know what you're looking for: Orb webs (the classic circular spiral — garden spiders), Funnel webs (sheet with a tunnel hiding spot), Sheet webs (flat horizontal sheets between plants), Cobwebs (messy, tangled webs in corners).
  2. Search everywhere: Check between fence posts, in bush corners, under eaves, between branches, in tall grass, and across doorways. Early morning is the best time — dew drops make webs sparkle and easy to spot!
  3. Mist and reveal: When you find a web, gently mist it with water from your spray bottle. Watch the silk patterns appear like magic! The water droplets cling to each silk thread, revealing the incredible design.
  4. Photograph each web: Take a photo of every different web type you find. Try to get the spider in the photo too (if it's visible). Note whether the spider sits in the centre, at the edge, or hides in a tunnel.
  5. Create your web gallery: On your paper, draw each web type you found and label it. Write down where you found it and what type it is. How many different types did you find? Can you spot which type is most common in your area?
Ranger Tip: Spider silk is stronger than steel of the same thickness! An orb-weaving spider can build a perfect web in under an hour, and many rebuild their web every single day.
Safety note: Never touch a spider web with a spider on it — you could harm the spider or get bitten. Keep a safe distance and use your camera to zoom in. Some spiders are venomous, so always look, never touch!
