CRITTER COMMANDER BADGE

Insect vs Spider Showdown

Lesson 10.2 — Insect vs Arachnid
🦁

Kitimu says: "People mix up insects and spiders all the time — but not YOU, Cub! Today you're going to find one of each and compare them side by side. Once you see the differences up close, you'll never confuse them again. Let's go, Cub!"

🎒 What You Need
Garden or park
Magnifying glass
Pencil and crayons
Your worksheet
📋 How To Do It
  1. Find an insect: Search your garden for any insect — an ant, a beetle, a fly, a grasshopper, or a butterfly. Look on plants, on the ground, and near flowers. When you find one, observe it closely with your magnifying glass.
  2. Find a spider: Now search for a spider. Check corners, under ledges, between plants, and along walls. Spiders love hiding in sheltered spots. Observe it carefully — don't disturb its web!
  3. Compare them side by side: Use this checklist: Body segments — insect has 3 (head, thorax, abdomen), spider has 2 (cephalothorax, abdomen). Legs — insect has 6, spider has 8. Antennae — insect YES, spider NO. Wings — insect MAYBE, spider NEVER.
  4. Draw both creatures: On your worksheet, draw the insect on the left and the spider on the right. Label the body parts: head, thorax, abdomen, legs, antennae (if present), and wings (if present).
  5. Write your verdict: Underneath your drawings, write one sentence explaining the easiest way YOU can tell them apart. What was the most obvious difference you noticed in real life?
Ranger Tip: The quickest way to tell them apart? Count the legs! If it has 6, it's an insect. If it has 8, it's an arachnid. Simple as that.
Safety note: Never pick up spiders or insects with your bare hands. Some spiders can bite, and some insects can sting. Observe with your eyes and magnifying glass only!
